The Bachelor's Degree Course in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was founded in 1943 with a strong role in the cultural field of Trieste. The foundation of the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering dates back to the same year and after 6 years it conferred the first Degree Diplomas, thus fueling the Trieste shipbuilding and motor industry area, that has always been the Region's industrial excellence.
The Degree Course in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering has been activated since then without interruption of continuity, and continues to be strongly integrated into the cultural and industrial fabric both regional and national. Today the Degree Course is included in the educational offer of the Department of Engineering and Architecture.
The Bachelor's Degree Course in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering aims to train the professional figure of the Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, and represents the 1st level of a training course that is completed with the Master's Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. It should be noted that the Bachelor's Degree Course has a non-professional, but methodological character. The Bachelor's Degree Course is not exclusively oriented to the direct placement of the graduate in the world of work, but is designed to provide the graduate with a sound basic engineering culture, in order to allow him/her to access the Master's Degree programmes with confidence. In other words, a graduate in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is taught reasoning methods to apply problem solving procedures, rather than simple procedures.
There are many specific aims in the programme: first of all to provide students with a sound basic culture that deals with fundamental subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Informatics; secondly, to have students acquire specific professional knowledge in the field of Naval Architecture, Ship Construction, and Marine Engineering; finally, to ensure the students an adequate mastery of both methods and content in the discussion of thecnical-scientific topics, in general of the engineering, and specifically of the marine disciplines.
The 1st year of the Bachelor's Degree Course includes some basic courses and one course of the naval sector, the 2nd year is still based on basic courses, specific courses of Industrial Engineering, and a course of Naval Architecture, while the 3rd year is focused mainly on courses that characterize both Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.
The final exam is a work that allows the student to deepen a specific issue of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, but at the same time involves the student in a light manner so as not to make him/her lose sight of the milestone represented by the transition to a Master's Degree Course.
The Bachelor's Degree Course is not divided into curricula, but it is structured in such a way as to allow the student to choose some courses in order to prepare the individual Study Plan that best suits personal attitudes. At the end of the studies, the graduate has acquired a cultural background that, in addition to allowing him/her access to the Master's Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, allows him/her to easily access any Master's Degree Course in Industrial Engineering.
The Bachelor's Degree Course in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering welcomes students from any High School, and promotes the inclusion in the basic courses of the 1st academic year with mathematics preparatory courses. The Degree Course has a national catchment area, including enrolled students from all Italian Regions. The Degree Course is not a limited number.
