Learning objectives

The Laboratory aims to develop, in an advanced and interdisciplinary manner, the technical knowledge and design skills of the student, or rather to provide the student with the following knowledges and skills:
D1. Knowledge and understanding. During the Lab the student will have to develop knowledge and ability to understand the relationship between man and environment and between man and landscape, with particular attention to the understanding of open spaces design and to the sustainability of human settlements transformations.
D2. Applying knowledge and understanding. At the end of the Lab the student must have developed the knowledge of analysis tools and techniques and the ability to develop programs, plans and procedures for assessing environmental and territorial impacts; but also the ability to plan and design interventions for the protection, redevelopment and transformation of urban and extra-urban spaces, based on the complexity of their different components and always in order to enhance the existing settlement and landscape structures.
D3. Making judgments. The knowledge and design skills achieved must lead the student to independently develop a regeneration project of complex contexts in the consolidated city, in the widespread settlements, in the agricultural and natural territory, aimed at the sustainable inclusion in the landscape of settlement and infrastructural networks, and at the protection and enhancement of cultural and environmental heritage systems.
D4. Communication skills. At the end of the Lab, the student will have learned adequate communication forms for the recognition of the values of the landscape, and developed, within the landscape project, tools for communicate to different actors his aesthetic, systemic-naturalistic and common heritage dimensions.
D5. Learning skills. At the end of the Lab, the student will demonstrate the ability to learn how to submit, in different areas and at various scales of project, scenarios and design strategies to forms of evaluation and validation, through the tools provided by ecology of the landscape and environmental assessment.

To have attended the preparatory Laboratories to Integrated Design Laboratory, as provided by the Regulations of the Master Course of Studies.

The Laboratory consists of 4 teaching modules: Landscape Ecology, Territorial Planning, Environmental Assessment and Landscape Management and Landscape Design.
The Laboratory will provide students with basics and skills about large area plans and programs, their relationship with territorial and environmental policies, with local structural and implementation plans, with principles of sustainable and resilient territory design and with project tools for the ecological transition and conversion of cities. Specific topics, both theoretical and methodological, will be proposed:
- data collection for ecological landscape analysis;
- construction of scenarios, strategies, actions and project tools for sustainable development in urban areas and the enhancement of territorial resources;
- design of relations between architectural and urban spaces and wider territorial areas;
- theoretical and experimental analysis of the main evaluation tools and impact control;
- approach to the process planning dimension, the environmental certification, etc.
Design workshops will be carried out on concrete case studies, always in collaboration with university teachers, professionals, experts from research centers, and other Italian and foreign universities, and local administrations, and will be structured in order to integrate the knowledge gained during the various teaching modules.
During the academic year 2020-2021 the laboratory will be dedicated to defining a strategic plan and some concrete projects dedicated to the theme "FROM THE GREEN CITY TO THE INHABITED TERRITORY OF THE GREEN DEAL", which will affect the landscape unit of the historic "Agro Monfalconese", in collaboration with the network of Municipalities of the lower Isontino (in particular those of Monfalcone and Staranzano), the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Foundation for Sustainable Development (Rome) and the Biofilic Cities Network. We will also collaborate (online) with three foreign universities: the Polytechnics of Madrid and Valencia and the Southern Scientific University of Lima.
The Landscape Ecology module will bring the student to deal with modern ecology of the landscape, where it represents a specific "level of biological organization", with its own structure and dynamics. Will provide the operational knowledge needed to use QGIS, one of the best Open Source software in the Geographic Information System, in terms of functionality, flexibility and ease of use. The Environmental Assessment and Landscape Management module will provide theoretical and practical information on issues, dimensions and areas of intervention relating to contemporary experiences, developed at national and international level, for the design and management of environmental and landscape resources. The Territorial Planning module will address, according to analysis and designing activities, the study of areas and research topics that represent some of the most interesting challenges to accept for those who intend to deal with the government of contemporary territory. Finally, the Landscape Design module will guide students acquiring the foundations of landscape design connected with the main landscape theories and the main techniques for developing and verifying the environmental project.

Teaching format

The Laboratory will be divided into lessons, seminars and practical exercises. Practical exercises will take place in groups of up to 3 people.
The Laboratory will organize throughout the year an activity of reading, interpreting and designing a vast area of territory, with in-depth analysis of intermediate scales, aimed at identifying relevant elements and systems for protecting/transforming plans for a territory in the regional context. Will also be defined and elaborated in graphic and written form territory's scenarios and visions for the future, able to orient the project choices to the landscape and urban scale. At the detail scale, will be carried out the design exercise related to the landscape.
Students will be required to work out a project and experiment with new operating tools and strategies to describe, interpret and transform different portions of open spaces, predominantly collective use, within the vast area already studied.

Classes will be held in Gorizia, at the Trieste University Pole of via Alviano 18.

Any changes to the methods described here, which become necessary to ensure the application of the safety protocols related to the COVID19 emergency, will be communicated on the Department, Study Program and teaching website.

Extended Programme

Per consultare il programma esteso ed aggiornato sulla base delle esigenze dimostrate dagli studenti durante il corso, si rinvia alla piattaforma e-learning Moodle.

End-of-course test

The phases of work will be marked by deliveries of intermediate exercises, aimed at assessing the progress of work and debate in the classroom between teachers and students.
For Erasmus students, who can attend only part of the 4 modules of the Annual Workshop, teachers will set up a personalized work program, based on the period of stay in Italy and frequented modules.
To take the final examination of the Laboratory, students need to attend lessons, take part in the seminar activities, carry out the exercises proposed and have some readings, chosen among those suggested in the official reading list, or even suggested by the student himself, after the agreement of the teachers.
The examination will be carried out by presenting the graphic and written works produced by each group during the Laboratory and a contemporaneous individual interview on theoretical-disciplinary themes related to the project, treated during lessons and increased reading of some volumes of the bibliography.
The final evaluation will be based on 2/3 on the project and 1/3 on the theoretical preparation.

Any changes to the methods described here, which become necessary to ensure the application of the safety protocols related to the COVID19 emergency, will be communicated on the Department, Study Program and teaching website.
